Environmental Protection Agency has added the abandoned Curtis
Specialty Papers Inc. property in Milford to a federal list of
the nation's most-polluted properties.An abandoned paper
mill in Milford is being added to the list of the nation's
most-polluted properties,
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today.
The former Curtis Specialty Papers Inc. property is one of
11 hazardous waste sites joining the Superfund's National
Priorities List, according to the EPA. The listing determines
which sites require further investigation and long-term cleanup.
The primary contaminant at the site is polychlorinated
biphenyls, or PCBs. That contaminant has been found at the
facility and Quequacommisacong Creek, which provides habitat for
federal and state threatened species.
Curtis Specialty Papers identified 20 areas of concern at the
roughly 105-acre site at 404 Frenchtown Road but later shut down
operations and declared bankruptcy, abandoning the site.
In October 2006, the state Department of Environmental
Protection and an emergency response contractor initiated
cleanup activities, including inspecting above-ground storage
tanks. The state then turned over the site to the EPA, which
removed chemical drums and secured the site.
