Smith Rebuttal

According to George McCracken, _Welcome Claimants, Proved, Disproved & Doubtful_ there were probably at least ten William Smiths in early PA. The following are two different William Smiths:

William came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the Ship "Welcome" Master Robert Greenway, from London, England. They arrived at upland Pennsylvania about the end of the 8th month 1682 with William Penn.

This William Smith probably died September 1702 unmarried and childless. (See Abington Monthly Meeting Records) He came on the Welcome as a servant to Richard Townsend (see Philadelphia MM Records).

According to the late C. Arthur Smith of Bucks County, Pennsylvania who spent over 60 years as a genealogist and historian for Bucks County and a descendant of this William Smith. "William Smith came to Pennsylvania as a servant of Phineas Pembleton and after freedom he purchased land in Wrightstown where he later married > Agnes Crossdale d/o Thomas and Agnes (Hathornthwait) Crossdale that came to America on the "Lamb".

Correction: William Smith's first wife was MARY CROASDALE, not Agnes. Her mother was Agnes Hathornthwait.

McCracken concurs that this William was the husband of Agnes Croasdale. He arrived 28 7th month 1682 on the ship Friends Adventure as an indentured servant of Phineas Pemberton.

He was POSSIBLY the same William Smith who was born 22 1m 1669 Wighton, Hull Parish, (Hull MM,) Yorkshire, England, the son of William Smith and Jane Wilberfoss. As far as I know this has not been firmly proven.

William Smith who married Agnes Croasdale and a woman named Mercy had at least 8 daughters- none of which were named Jane which makes me believe he was to son of another couple.
