Clockmakers of Montgomery County, 1740-1850

William Lukens Potts (July 17,1771-1854)

..son of Thomas Potts and Elizabeth Lukens. William's parents were originally from Moreland Township in Montgomery County, but eventually settled in Sussex County, New Jersey. Thomas was a millwright by trade and served in the Provincial Assembly just prior to his death in 1776. What can be verified is that in 1796, at age twenty-five, (William) Potts was working in the clock shop of Benjamin Rittenhouse in Worcester Township, Montgomery County Pennsylvania...

William Potts removed from Worcester in 1798, and his position was taken by Benjamin Evans, a Rittenhouse apprentice who had just come of age.

After leaving Worcester, William L. Potts moved to Pitts Town, New Jersey. ... In 1801 Potts married Rachel Hughes. Two years later the couple was living in Alexandria Township, Hunterdon Count7y, New Jersey. Then in 1807, Potts purchased land and moved to Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

William Lukens Potts died in 17 January 1854 at 82 years of age. He is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.
