Copy of the Marriage Certificate

  Whereas, William Smith and Mary Croasdale, both of the province of Pennsylvania, having declared their intentions of taking each other as husband and wife before several monthly meetings of the people of God, called Quakers, according to the good order used among them, whose proceedings thereon after deliberate consideration and consent of parents and relations, consent being approved by said meetings, the publication thereof having been made according to the law of the province.

  Now these are to certify to whom it may concern, that for the full determination of their intentions, this 20th day of Ninth month 1690, they the said William Smith and Mary Croasdale appeared in a public solemn assembly of the said people, met together for the end and purpose, at the house of John Chapman, at Wrightstown, in the county of Bucks, according to the example of the Holy men of God, surrounded in the spirit of Truth.

  Then the said William Smith taking the said Mary Croasdale by the hand id openly declare as followed:  Friends, in the presence and fear of God, and before you his people, I take Mary Croasdale to be my wife, promising to be to her a loving and faithful husband till death separate us.

  And then and there in the said assembly, the said Mary Croasdale in the like manner declared as followed:  Friends, in the presence and fear of God and before you his people, I take William Smith to be my husband, promising to be to him a loving and obedient wife till death separate us.

  And the said William and Mary his wife, as a further confirmation thereof, did then and there to these presents set their hands, and we whose names are hereunto subscribed as witnesses, have also to those subscribed our hands the day and year above written.
