bullet LACKAWANNA COUNTY
bullet Lackawanna County was formed in 1878 from part of Luzerne County.  It is the youngest of Pennsylvania’s 67 Counties, and it took nearly 40 years to win its independence.  A new State Constitution passed in that year omitted an old provision that required a majority vote from citizens of the County that was about to be divided and replaced it with a rule that stated that a majority of the vote was required only from the citizens of the proposed new county.  A vote on August 13th of 1878 approved the formation of the new county by a near 6 to 1 margin.  Lackawanna County was officially chartered on the 21st of that year.
