Mary Fretz Shively died peacefully
in her sleep Saturday, March 20, 2010.
She was born June 4, 1915, on the Fretz
family homestead in Bedminster. Mary was educated in a one-room
school, Tyson School, in Bedminster. She was a 1932 graduate of
Doylestown High School and a 1934 graduate of Westchester State
Teachers College. She returned to teach in the same one-room
school until it's closure two years later.
Mary married C. Wayne Shively in 1936 and
in the following year bore her only child, Robert W. Shively.
She launched the Nockamixon school lunch
program in 1942.
She and her husband ran a postal delivery
route between Perkasie and Revere for 18 years.
Mary was an avid history and genealogy
buff, providing historical tours and speaking numerous times
before local historical societies.
Many remember her whizzing around the lawn
on her John Deere tractor, or canning multitudes of chow-chow.
She also served on the board of directors of the Fretz Family
Association.
Mary was the daughter of the late Jacob
Franklin (Loux) Fretz and Minnie Mae Trauch Fretz. In addition
to her husband, C. Wayne, who died in 1981, she was preceded in
death by two brothers, Reed and Ralph; a half brother, Lloyd Ott;
and two sisters, Eunice and Margaret.
Her funeral service will be held at 11
a.m. Friday, March 26, in St.
Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church (Kellers
Church), 3668 Ridge Road, Perkasie, PA 18944. The Rev. Robert E.
Mitman will be presiding. Friends may call at the church after
10 a.m. Friday. Interment will be in Kellers Church Cemetery
with a luncheon following.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made
to Bucks County Association for the Blind, P.O. Box 290,
