Andrew A. Black Jr., 80, of New Hope, Pa. died March 22 at his home.
Born at 49 S. Main St. in Lambertville, he later moved to 13 York St. living there until becoming a resident of New Hope, Pa. in 1946.
He graduated from the Lambertville High School in 1934 and graduated from the Casey Jones School of Engineering, Newark, N.J.
in 1936. He was then employed as a welder by an aircraft manufacturing company. In November of 1941, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. After becoming a pilot, he was a flight instructor on twin engine aircraft, and later on B-17's. Beginning in June of 1945 as a Captain with the 20th Air Force, he was stationed on the island of Saipan. He flew 18 combat missions over Japan as a B-29 Pilot.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Pacific Theatre Medal with three Battle Stars.
As a commercial pilot, Mr. Black flew everything from DC-3's to DC-10's for Penn Central, Capital and United Airlines. He retired with the rank of Captain in 1978 with 31 years of service. He was also a member of the Retired Pilot's Association.
He was a member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, New Hope.
Son of the late Andrew A. Black Sr. and Margaret Cavanaugh Black, he married Alice McCauley Black, who died in 1996.
He is survived by one daughter and son in-law, Kathy and Craig Barker of Centralia, Washington; one son and daughter-in-law, Andrew A. and Sharon Black III of W. Amwell Township, N.J.; and four grandchildren, Ryan Barker and Kyle Barker, both of Centralia, Washington, and Andrew A. Black IV and Shaelee Tatum Black, both of W. Amwell Township, N.J.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 1st at 11:30 a.m. at St. Martin Tours Catholic Church, New Street, New Hope, Pa. The burial will follow in the parish cemetery. The calling hours will be Wednesday, April 1 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Garefino Funeral Home, 12 N. Franklin St., Route 179, Lambertville, N.J.

Mabel Black
Mabel Black of Dublin died Tuesday, February 2, 1999 in Doylestown Hospital, Doylestown Township. She was 97.
She was the wife of the late Arnold R. Black who died in 1984.
Born in New Britain Township, she was a daughter of the late Silas and May (Worthington) Myers.
Mrs. Black had been a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dublin.
She is survived by two sons, Arnold Earl Black and his wife, Doris Black of Dresher and Emerson Black of Richland Township; a daughter, Evelyn Ruth Ahlum and her husband, John E. Ahlum of Haycock Township; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 8, 1999 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Route 313 and Quarry Road, Dublin. Interment will be in St. Luke's Union Cemetery, Dublin. Friends may call Monday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church.
