DR. CHARLES H. HEWITT JR.

 

DR. CHARLES HICKMAN HEWITT JR. of Aiken, S.C. died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at his residence. He was 55.

Born in Aberdeen, Md., Dr. Hewitt had lived in Lexington, Ky., Temple, Texas, and Long Branch, N.J. before moving to Aiken in 1979.

He received his medical degree from Hahnemann University Medical College in Philadelphia and his master of science degree from the University of New Mexico.

Dr. Hewitt was co-founder the Family Medcenters in Aiken and was widely known for his advocacy and care for abused children.

It has been said that Dr. Hewitt was born to be a physician.

Following his retirement from medical practice he became a volunteer advocate for disabled people and was co-founder of Aiken Unitarian Universalist Church.

He is survived by his wife, NAOMI J. FROST-HEWITT of Aiken; his daughter, CHERIE HEWITT-OFFENBECKER and her husband, GALEN, of Aiken; his granddaughter, JESSICA NAOMI HEWITT; two brothers, JAMES P. HEWITT of Tampa, Fla., and WILLIAM D. HEWITT of Gettysburg, Pa.; his sister, SUSAN BOTTENFIELD WOODS of Warrington; and his mother, IRENE C. HEWITT, also of Warrington.

A memorial service will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Hopeland Gardens, Whiskey Road, Aiken. A reception at Rye Patch will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Aiken Unitarian Universalist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 2231, Aiken, SC 29802, the Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons, 135 Lancaster St., Aiken, SC 29801, or Helping Hands Children's Shelter, 100 John Elliott Lane, Aiken, SC 29801.
