At what date the first church organization was effected cannot be definitely determined.

Tradition asserts that meetings were held as early as 1737. It is noticeable that no interments

ever took place here, but that the dead were buried in the graveyard of the East Swamp

church, about a mile to the east from the site of the first church building. The latter (East

Swamp) church was built about the year 1771. After the erection of this new house of

worship services were held in both alternately. The new one was afterward destroyed by

fire, and a second of logs, erected in its stead, which served the double purpose of school

and meeting house. It was used as a meeting house until 1850, when it was replaced by the

present large East Swamp church. In 1790 a tract of eighty perches was conveyed and this

lot is the site of the present West Swamp Mennonite church. The original meeting house was

removed and rebuilt and services held there until 1819. Battle's History of BC (1887), page
