1719 A separation occurred from the see Churchville Reformed) Church of North and Southampton because of the friction between the Dutch and Scotch-Irish. It may be correctly inferred that this was caused by dissatisfaction among the Dutch in regard to the introduction of the English language and Presbyterian usages into the church services; and from this time they were employed almost exclusively, and an organization was effected; under the name of "The Christian Church of Sammany creek," subsequently known as the Bensalem Presbyterian Church. 1683 The first meetings of Friends in the state were held within the limits of Falls Township. Samuel Smith thus speaks of this: "Meetings for worship were very early established about the Falls, even before the land bore the name of Pennsylvania" and the Friends who were settled from Bristol upward used to attend the meetings for business at Burlington. Battle's History of BC (1887), page 382. Named for the Falls of the Delaware River, the meeting was founded in 1683 and was the first religious institution in bucks County. William Penn Worshipped at the first Falls meetinghouse, which is no longer standing. The current meetinghouse dates from 1841. The original church stood on the hill near the abandoned cemetery.
It was built of logs, probably in 1747, the "Brick" church, the third structure at that place erected by the Lutheran and Reformed congregations, was destroyed by fire. The denominations then separated, the Lutherans building a new church and the Reformed congregation rebuilding and occupying the Brick Church. By JAMES MCGINNIS
Bucks County Courier Times

A tiny church built by escaped slaves was the setting

Easter morning for a sunrise service in Buckingham.

About 40 people trekked up Buckingham Mountain in the
wee hours of the morning to sing and pray in the old

Mount Gilead African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, Mount Gilead
now opens only a few times a year. It drew a crowd of
about 40 on Sunday.

Lenny Harvett of Trenton said he got up at 4 a.m. to come
to the Methodist service. Harvett said he wanted to
experience “the day of resurrection” in a church built by
former slaves.

Solo performers sang soulful melodies. John Jackson of
Newtown sang “The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power”
as listeners drummed their feet against the old wooden
floorboards.

Following the service, church caretaker John Reinhardt
pointed out evidence of recent vandalism at the church.
The north wall of the stone building was defaced with
graffiti. There is damage to some of the graves, which
belonged to escaped slaves. Vandals also stole the sign
posted on the road announcing Sunday's celebration,
Reinhardt said. These incidents were reported to the local
police, who are investigating, he added.

The Rev. David Jackson of the Second Baptist Church in
Doylestown said he would not let the vandalism upset him.

“We need not worry about the vandalism. We need not
worry about the stolen signs. God is there in our lives. He's
at the controls. He's standing behind us,” Jackson said.

Mount Gilead Church was first constructed of logs in 1832
and later fortified with stone, according to the book “Black
Heritage Sites” by Nancy Curtis. The church was one of
the last stops in Pennsylvania for slaves heading to New
Jersey, according to the book.

1811 Methodism was introduced into Newtown in 1811 and 1812, when campmeetings were held in the vicinity. It was not until 1840, however, that an organization was effected, at which time it was embraced in the Doylestown and Attleboro circuit, the existence of which dates from may 29, 1840, when it embraced Doylestown, New Hope, Pennsville, Attleboro, Newtown, Yardley, Morrisville, and Lumberville.
